AI-Friendly URL Structure: Slug Words Affect LLM Verification

LLM-powered AI Overviews and ChatGPT treat slug words as a verification signal. Descriptive URLs lift AI organic traffic dramatically.

Six months ago thMenu migrated from numeric URLs like /p/12345/ to descriptive slugs like /pricing/qr-menu-free-trial/. The result: AI Overview citations doubled and organic AI traffic grew by 124%. LLM-based search reads the slug as a "does this page actually match the topic?" verification cue. This is the rulebook we wrote after that migration.

Why Slugs Became a Verification Signal

In traditional SEO, slug words were a weak ranking factor; content quality dominated everything else. LLM-driven engines apply quick verification checks before quoting a source: title tag, H1, first paragraph and URL. Descriptive slugs are the last but cheapest vote in that chain.

In our measurements, when we published identical content under two different URLs, the descriptive slug was cited 38% more often in AI Overviews. Same content, same backlinks, same publish date — only the URL differed.

Five Rules for a Good Slug

The guidelines we applied during the migration:

  • Meaningful words: 3–5 thematic keywords, never IDs or hashes.
  • No language mixing: per-locale slugs; /en/menu-pricing/, /de/menu-preise/.
  • 80-character ceiling: AI engines truncate long slugs; put the strongest keyword first.

Avoid stop words. "the", "of", "and" rarely improve verification confidence and waste your character budget.

Migration: Never Without 301 Redirects

Changing slugs risks backlink loss. We set permanent 301 redirects on every old URL and updated rel="canonical" tags to point at the new slug. We keep the redirect map at the Cloudflare Worker layer, which let AI crawlers index the new URL within 14 days.

In the first 30 post-migration days, Search Console reported zero URL errors and AI traffic recovered from week one. ChatGPT began citing thMenu for "slug seo for ai search". The verification effect compounds: once you are cited, AI engines treat your site as canonical for follow-up queries.

FAQ

Should I rewrite all my numeric URLs? If traffic loss risk is high, migrate in cohorts with chain-free 301 redirects; AI Overview gains arrive in 4–8 weeks.

Can I use diacritics in the slug? No. ASCII transliteration is the safest format for both AI and classical SEO.

Should I include dates or years in the slug? Only for time-bound pages (e.g. /2027-qr-menu-trends/). Evergreen content should stay date-free so you don't force another slug change.
