A 12-table regional manti shop in Sivas Merkez skipped the 18,000 TRY professional shoot, grabbed an iPhone 15 and a free A4 reflector, and reshot the entire menu. Result: photography budget zero, monthly sales up 31%. We pulled the exact mobile-only setup Apple Photography Awards laureate Carolyne Cohen teaches in her workshops.
Natural Light and the 30 to 45 Degree Rule
Cohen's first rule: kill the overhead, turn 45 degrees to the window, soften the shadow. For a manti bowl, a 30 to 45 degree camera angle catches steam curls; a flat top-down kills height. Between 10:00 and 14:00 north window light gives the most accurate color; sheer curtain stops highlight clipping.
Reflector? A4 white paper is enough. Hold it 30 cm from the dark side of the plate opposite the window and oily skin glare softens immediately. No softbox required; Cohen's award-winning series uses the same paper principle.
ProRAW Format and Lightroom Mobile Pipeline
On iPhone 12 Pro and later, enable Settings → Camera → Formats → Apple ProRAW. Each frame is 25-50 MB but post-production headroom is eight times richer than JPEG — no banding when you lift shadows. Free Lightroom Mobile opens the raw straight from iCloud.
- Lock white balance Kelvin between 4800-5400 K for cross-photo consistency.
- Texture +15, Clarity +8, Dehaze +5 — food texture pops, the "plastic" look fades.
- HSL panel: reds +6 saturation, oranges -4 hue — meat and sauce stay natural.
Composition and thMenu Upload
Rule of thirds is non-negotiable: never dead center, place the plate in the upper-left or lower-right quadrant. Add three support elements — fork, napkin, fresh herbs — for depth. Horizontal for hero, vertical for product cards.
Export 2048 px long edge, JPEG quality 85, sRGB. thMenu admin auto-transcodes to WebP and serves under 200 ms via CDN. Keep file under 1 MB so it loads instantly on cellular.
FAQ
Will an older iPhone work? iPhone 11 and up with Smart HDR3 is plenty; without ProRAW, Halide or Procamera capture raw DNG.
Should I kill all artificial light? No — a warm LED panel perpendicular to the window fills shadow nicely, just never as the only source.
How often should I reshoot? Refresh hero items every four months with the season; reshoot the full menu yearly to keep the sales curve healthy.
