A specialty coffee shop in Konya kept seeing "Direct" traffic surge while their Google Search Console clicks stayed flat. The owner, Huseyin, ran an experiment: he asked ChatGPT for "specialty coffee in central Konya" and watched his analytics. The visit landed as "Direct" — invisible in any meaningful channel report.
Six Referrer Domains You Must Track
GA4's default channel groups have not caught up with AI assistants. Most LLM-driven traffic falls under "Referral" or "Direct," which makes attribution impossible without intervention.
Add these six sources to a custom channel: chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, claude.ai, you.com and copilot.microsoft.com. Together they generate roughly 14 distinct query themes per month for a typical mid-market hospitality site. Huseyin's busiest referrers were Perplexity and ChatGPT, with Claude and Gemini tied for third.
GA4 Custom Channel Setup
Navigate to Admin > Data Settings > Channel Groups > Create Custom Channel Group. Name the new channel "AI Search" and place its rule above the standard "Organic Search" entry, because GA4 evaluates rules top-down and stops at the first match.
Use this regex pattern in the Source field: openai\.com|perplexity\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|claude\.ai|you\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com. Save and wait 24–48 hours for data to populate. Verify with Reports > Acquisition > Traffic Acquisition and check the channel filter dropdown.
Why AI Search Converts 42% Higher
Two weeks after activation, Huseyin compared his AI Search channel against generic Organic Search. The result was striking: AI Search sessions converted 42% higher (defined as a menu view of 30+ seconds or a contact tap).
The reason is intent filtering. By the time a user clicks the link in ChatGPT or Perplexity, the AI has already pre-qualified them: it has answered the "is this place open?", "do they have specialty coffee?", "is it within walking distance?" sub-questions. The visitor arrives nearly ready to act. Layer UTM tags on links you control (your QR menu, social bios, structured data) to deepen this analysis.
FAQ
Will GA4 backfill historic AI traffic into this channel? No. Custom channel rules apply prospectively. For historical context, build an Exploration with a source-contains filter — but that is a one-time view, not a live channel.
What about Bing Chat? Microsoft consolidated Bing Chat into Copilot, so the dominant domain is now copilot.microsoft.com. Keep the old bing.com/chat reference as a fallback for at most six months.
Do AI crawlers show up in this channel too? Crawler hits (GPTBot, PerplexityBot) usually do not execute JavaScript and never reach GA4. The channel reflects human visits that originate from an AI answer.
