How to Improve a Restaurant's Visibility on Google

Improving a restaurant's visibility on Google starts with looking: search for your restaurant the way guests do, on a phone, and note what Google shows — your Business Profile, your website, your menu, your photos, other sites' listings. Then fix the gaps in order of impact: a complete and verified Business Profile, accurate hours, a menu Google and guests can read as text, a website with the same details, and steady replies to reviews. Google is clear that there is no way to pay for a better local ranking.

  1. Search for your restaurant's name, and your name plus your town.
  2. Search for what you serve plus "near me", standing near the restaurant.
  3. Open Google Maps and search for your street.
  4. Search site: followed by your website's address, to see which of its pages Google has indexed.
  5. Write down what is missing, wrong or out of date.

Step 2: Fix what Google says about you

Google's help pages say local results depend mainly on relevance, distance and how well-known a business is, and they recommend a verified profile with complete information, accurate opening hours including special hours, photos and replies to reviews. Start here: a wrong opening time on Maps costs more guests than any website change.

The details are in the restaurant Google Business Profile guide.

  • Put your menu link in the profile's menu link field — Google notes that profile changes can take 24 to 48 hours to appear.
  • Make sure the link opens a menu written as text, not a photo or a PDF.
  • Keep prices and dishes current, so what Google shows matches what you serve.

Step 4: Make your website match

  • The same name, address, phone and hours as the profile, written the same way.
  • A page Google can index: Google's starter guide is plain that nothing guarantees indexing or a top position, so give it real content.
  • Structured data describing the restaurant, its hours and its menu.

Step 5: Keep it up

A simple routine
WhenWhat
Every weekReply to new reviews; check special hours for coming holidays
Every monthRepeat the searches from step 1; add a few new photos
Every menu changeCheck that the menu link still opens the current menu

Google visibility and Thmenu

Thmenu gives your restaurant a menu page and an About page on menu.thmenu.com that carry schema.org Restaurant data — the menu, opening hours and address — so search engines can read the facts directly; that is the address to put in your Google profile's menu link field. A menu page with no dishes is kept out of search until it has some. If you choose to be listed in the Thmenu directory, your pages are included in the menu site's sitemap. In the panel, pasting your Google Maps share link fills in the restaurant's name and location. Thmenu does not edit your Google Business Profile: hours, photos and reviews there are managed by you, on Google.
