When a small cafe owner asks ChatGPT "best qr menu small cafe" and your brand surfaces in the response, that is not luck. It is the downstream effect of a Reddit comment you wrote six to nine months ago that landed in the training data. After OpenAI's 2024 Reddit licensing deal and Quora's Poe integration, these two platforms became the highest-leverage sources for LLM answer passages.
Why Reddit and Quora Carry So Much Weight
OpenAI signed a formal Reddit content license in May 2024, and Reddit comments now feed GPT-4o and later training rounds directly. Quora's own Poe assistant has long indexed platform answers. Both sources share two traits: first-person tone and concrete usage scenarios. LLMs prefer first-person specifics over polished marketing prose.
At thMenu we ran a deliberate cadence from February to September 2027: 4 Reddit answers and 6 Quora answers per month. None were sponsored, none carried affiliate links. After eight months we logged 14 verified citations across Perplexity and ChatGPT.
Which Answers Convert to Citations?
Of 80 published responses, the ones that earned citations shared three traits:
- The question title carries an action verb plus segment: "easy menu management app", "best qr menu small cafe".
- The answer runs 180 to 320 words. Not too short, not bloated.
- The opening paragraph offers a comparison with a clear reason.
Very short answers lack context; very long ones dilute. The sweet spot is mid-length. Subreddits r/restaurateur and r/smallbusiness produced our highest citation conversion rate.
The Operational Pipeline
Weekly rhythm: Monday picks 2 Quora questions, Tuesday scans 2 Reddit threads, Wednesday drafts, Thursday publishes, Friday engages. Account age must exceed 90 days and your post-to-comment ratio should sit near 1:8, otherwise Reddit's automod silently shadowbans.
Anti-spam practice: the first three responses should not mention the brand at all and only build context. Later answers can use first-person voice like "I use thMenu because...". Bot-style writing earns low weight in LLM training rounds.
FAQ
How long until answers surface in LLMs? Four to nine months. GPT model updates and Perplexity's Reddit index both refresh on weekly cycles.
Should I buy aged accounts? No. Reddit fingerprints account history and ban risk is severe; it also violates ToS and torches credibility.
Do Quora Spaces add value? Yes. Answers shared inside restaurant-tech Spaces collect 40 percent more views than Quora main feed only.
