Restaurant Google Business Profile: A Complete Guide

A Google Business Profile is the panel that shows your restaurant on Google Search and Maps: name, category, hours, address, phone, photos, menu and reviews. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, and says that complete, accurate information helps a profile appear for the right searches. For a restaurant that means the real name and the right category, correct hours — holidays included — a menu guests can read, recent photos, and replies to reviews.

Claim it, and keep one profile

  • Search for your restaurant on Google Maps; if a profile already exists, claim it instead of creating another one — Google allows one profile per business.
  • Use the name on your sign. Google asks for the real-world name and does not allow marketing taglines or other extra information in it.
  • Choose as few categories as possible, as specific as possible, and representative of what you mainly are.

Hours, including special hours

Google lists your business hours, including special hours, among the information to provide, and warns that inaccurate information can keep a profile out of relevant searches. Set holiday and event hours ahead of time: a guest who arrives at a closed door because Google said "open" is the most avoidable bad review there is.

  • Food and drink businesses can list menu sections and dishes, with descriptions and prices, in the menu editor; Google says changes can take 24–48 hours to appear on Maps and Search.
  • You can also add a menu link — the address of your own online menu — in the profile's contact information.
  • A link to a live web menu stays correct when you change a price; a photo or a PDF of the menu has to be replaced every time.
  • Point the menu link at the menu itself, not at a home page the guest then has to search.

Why a web menu beats a file: QR menu vs PDF menu.

Photos

Google suggests photos and videos to show what you offer. Add the outside of the restaurant so guests recognise it, the room, and real dishes as they are served — and replace them when the menu or the room changes.

Reviews

  • Reply to reviews. Google notes that replying shows customers you value their feedback; keep replies short and specific rather than the same thank-you every time.
  • Answer critical reviews calmly, say what you changed, and take the details offline.
  • You may ask guests for reviews — Google suggests a link or a QR code — but its policies do not allow offering incentives for reviews, discouraging negative reviews, or selectively asking only for positive ones.
  • Read reviews for patterns: the same complaint three times is a process to fix, not a guest to argue with.

Google states that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.

Keep it consistent with your website

Your name, address, phone number and hours should read the same on Google, on your website and on your menu. When they disagree, guests do not know which to believe — and neither do search engines.

Your Google profile and Thmenu

Thmenu gives each restaurant a live menu at its own address on menu.thmenu.com, which you can use as the menu link in your Google Business Profile, so a price change or a sold-out dish shows up there without uploading anything. Paste your Google Maps share link into Thmenu's settings and it fills in your restaurant's name and location and keeps the link. Your About page shows the hours, the address with directions, the phone number and the photos from the same restaurant profile, and the restaurant pages carry structured data with the menu, the opening hours and the address. Thmenu does not edit your Google Business Profile for you; you manage it in Google.
