AI & Restaurants

What Is AEO for Restaurants?

AEO — answer engine optimisation — is the practice of making your restaurant easy for AI assistants and AI search to answer questions about: is it open now, does it have vegan dishes, can I book for six tonight. It is a label marketers use, not a standard, and for a restaurant it mostly means doing ordinary search work well — clear facts as text, consistent everywhere, described with structured data that matches the page.

Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimisations needed to appear in its AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that the usual search best practices still apply. In practice, AEO is SEO written with the guest's question in mind.

What AEO means for a restaurant

  • Answer the questions guests actually ask, on your own pages: hours, location, parking, bookings, groups, diets, allergens, price level, card payments.
  • State each fact once, plainly, in a sentence or a list — not only inside an image.
  • Keep the menu complete and current, with dietary labels and allergens on each dish.
  • Describe the restaurant with structured data that matches what the page shows.
  • Keep your name, address, phone and hours identical on every listing.

The full checklist: how to make your restaurant ready for AI search.

What AEO cannot do

  • Guarantee a mention. Google states that indexing and serving are not guaranteed, and that valid structured data does not guarantee any special appearance.
  • Fix a weak offer. Answers can draw on reviews and listings as well as your own pages, and a well-written page does not change what guests say about you.
  • Replace accuracy. A page tuned for answers but out of date produces confident wrong answers — the worst outcome for a guest.

Be cautious with services that sell AEO as a separate, guaranteed channel. Ask what they will change on your pages and listings, and how they will measure bookings or orders, not "visibility scores".

How to tell if it is working

  1. Write down five questions your guests ask before they visit.
  2. Ask them to two or three assistants once a month, and note which answers are right, wrong or missing.
  3. Trace each wrong answer to its source and correct it there.
  4. Watch bookings and orders, not mentions alone.

AEO and Thmenu

Thmenu publishes each restaurant's menu — dishes, descriptions, prices, options and allergens — and an About page with hours, address and phone as text on menu.thmenu.com, and adds schema.org Restaurant data with the menu, opening hours and address built from the same profile, so the facts and the markup agree. Listing in the Thmenu directory that AI assistants read is a separate choice you switch on in the panel.
